Anyone know about hip dysplasia in a Boxer puppy?

My 3 month old boxer puppy was diagnosed with hip dysplasia on xray. Everyone else I have talked to says that he is too young to be diagnosed, they have to be full grown before you know for sure. We want to breed him with our female and I need to know for sure. (I will be getting a second opinion from another vet). Just wondered if anyone had any experience with this, or boxer breeding in general. Thanks!

We had to give Hanes his name because he arrived at the shelter in a tee-shirt! The mystery will never be solved, because his owners apparently never looked for him. This gorgeous pup is almost an adult, but Hanes is still a VERY silly puppy in most ways. Hanes thinks the world is his playpen and everything is a toy! Hanes loves to play with other dogs too. After all, aren’t they the best toy? Hanes went to his first show recently, and every time his handler got up, he climbed into her seat — and GRINNED! In short, Hanes is a clown and proud of it! Ask if Hanes is going to an upcoming adoption show, and if you attend, be sure to bring your sense of humor. You’ll get your fill of chuckles! UPDATE: At his first show, one of our volunteers noticed that Hanes had an odd gait. We took Hanes to our vet, who referred him to a orthopedic specialist. Hanes not only had an old fracture in one of his legs, but the hip was out of the socket! The specialist recommended a triple pelvic osteotomy, which was done on January 9. The operation was a success, but Hanes will be out of commission for a while. Thanks to dawg’s generous donors, who made it possible for Hanes to receive this operation. And special thanks to Dr. Prostredny, surgical specialist, for providing his services at a discount!

What is the better treatment for dog hip dysplasia, Adequan or a supplement like Springtime Joint Health pill?

My 11th Month old Puppy has dip dysplasia and the Vets have ruled out a TPO as he shows signs of arthritis. I need help deciding on what course of treatment to use. Adequan (which is a monthly shot) or a supplement pill like Springtime Joint Health Chewables which contains Glucosamine HCL and Chondroitin sulfate. Also if I go with the supplement does anybody have any recomendations? Please help
He was from the pound but thanks for the heads up.
I have explored the surgical options. He has about 30 % of the ball in the hip. Not very good. He is a lab and will most likely be a 90lb skinny dog. The surgery where they just remove the hip joint and create a fake joint is recommended for dogs under 45 pounds. I have spoke with a vet and he said that he has done it on larger dogs with success but it should be a last resort. Thank You for the help.

Finnegan is balanced by Leann, canine rehab therapist, and a trainee, on an exercise ball which serves two purposes; it stretches out his hips and gently helps him bear weight on his hind legs to improve his mobility and range of motion and decrease the chance he will tear a muscle or injure his knee while recovering from his surgery. This video was shot approximately six weeks post op. All dogs must first have heat applied to their hips, and have their hind legs moved gently through their normal range of motion before being placed on the small balance ball. In other words, don’t try this at home unless you have been trained the proper sequence of rehab treatments and procedures.

In time for Veterans Day, East Coast Assistance Dogs (ECAD), in conjunction with at risk students at Children’s Village’s residential school, will be training four veterans who were disabled in the Iraq War to work with their new assistance dogs. Assistance Dog Boot Camp, which runs from November 4 through November 18, is a rigorous two-week program in which the Vets are paired with their new canine helpers and learn how to work with the dogs and care for them. The Vets will be trained through lectures, dog handling drills and community field trips conducted by ECAD instructors and teen trainers. Under the supervision of ECAD staff, the students at Children’s Village and other residential schools in the area have spent the past 18-24 months training dogs to perform more than 80 commands, including opening and closings doors, answering the phone, turning on lights, acting as stability supports and responding to medical alarms. These special animals will give their new owners a measure of independence and security not otherwise possible. This special All Veterans Boot Camp comes to an end at Assistance Dog Graduation on November 19th at 5:30pm. The students will ceremoniously hand over the leads of the dogs that they have spent so much time caring for, training, and loving. For the students, the Assistance Dog Training Program is a chance to give back to people who are less fortunate then they are. Veterans receiving dogs are as follows: •Mary Dague, age 23, of San Antonio, TX Ms. Dague is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom where she lost both her arms from the elbow down. •Luis Montalvan, age 35, from Brooklyn, NY Mr. Montalvan served his country for 15 years. He did two tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was wounded in Iraq in an assassination attempt by attackers with knives, where he was knocked unconscious and suffered three vertebrae fractured in his back, leading to mobility issues with his right leg. •Andrew Hanson, age 22 years old, of Luverne, MN – Mr. Hanson lost both of his legs due to a roadside bombing while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. •Ricky Boone, age 49, from Hempstead, NY – Mr. Boone served during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he received a hip injury and underwent spinal surgery. # # # East Coast Assistance Dogs (ECAD), based in Torrington Connecticut, is a non-profit organization that was founded for the purpose of helping people with disabilities gain greater independent and mobility through the use of specially trained dogs. Justin stayed in a cage at the SPCA for 8 months until I brought him home to foster. One week after I made this video I got a call from a very nice lady, 40 miles away, who quickly adopted Justin the next day. She said it was all because of the video. Justin is an unexceptional cat in almost every way. He is an orange tabby stray, about eight years old, with a crooked smile due to a missing canine tooth. He also has a scarred ear that always droops. When you get to know him, you realize that Justin also had a hip injury, has an imperfect gait, and can not jump as high as your lap. In short, he was one of the less-adoptable cats in the place! Almost any cat is wonderful once you get acquainted.
